THE AIM OF THE YWCA

The YWCA, believing in the equal value of each individual in front of God, aims to deepen fellowship among its members, to protect the dignity of each person and to promote peace and justice along with the members of YWCAs all over the world.

At present, about 1500 members of all ages are studying and doing volunteer activities in various groups at the Tokyo YWCA building, four centers, members' homes and community halls of some Wards in Tokyo. The Tokyo YWCA is an international organization as well.It is one of the local YWCAs in Japan organized under the Japan YWCA (the National YWCA). Since the Japan YWCA is a member the World YWCA, becoming a member of the Tokyo YWCA means to take a part in the international fellowship of the world-wide organization.

Briefly about the World YWCA - The YWCA was born in London, England in 1855 as a group of Christian women for praying and serving others. In 1894,groups aiming for the same goal gathered together from various countries and formed the World YWCA. Its head office is in Geneva, Switzerland. Now in more than 90 areas and countries, the World YWCA is carrying out activities focused on women's health and their environment; violence against women; child abuse; advocating peace in the Middle East and so forth.

As a member of this organization, Tokyo YWCA sends its delegates through the Japan YWCA to the conferences sponsored by the World YWCA such as the World Convention of YWCA, World Youth Conferences, etc.

DONATIONS :We ask for your kind support.!

Your donations and goodwill presents always make our YWCA possible to carry out its activities.
At present, the Tokyo YWCA is planning and carrying on several projects in order to build a peaceful and livable environment in our society.

The Projects now being planned and carried out by the Tokyo YWCA are:

Programs for Youth
(at Itabashi,Kokuryo,Musashino Centers; Nojiri Campsite;Tokyo YWCA building)
In order to help young people to grow as independent, creative and cooperative individuals through close relationships with their peers and leaders, each center plans activities appropriate in its area. Special efforts are made to provide youngsters some experiences they cannot get at schools and homes. At the same time, opportunities are given to parents to share their problems in bringing up children and to discuss those problems with others in a group. Recently a couple of regular participants of these programs have joined in planning outdoor activities. In summer, special programs such as camping are held at Nojiri Campsite in Nagano prefecture.
"Japanese Mothers for International Students" Movement
"Japanese Mothers for International Students" Movement
In this movement, Japanese mothers and international students make pairs so they may get to know more about each other, their countries and cultures. Even though providing pleasant school life to each student is the primary concern of this group, they also work for improving the system of admitting students from overseas, when necessary. Besides scholarships, there is a fund from which students can borrow, when they are in financial difficulties because of contingency.
"Consultation room" is open to any international students who have troubles and problems.
Program for Foreigners Working in Japan
We also offer the Tokyo YWCA Intensive Course of Japanese Language for those who are from foreign countries and working in Japan.
Promoting Volunteer Activities
To meet the needs of society, Tokyo YWCA organizes and carries out various volunteer activities at Tokyo YWCA building and local centers. While training courses are held for those who want to be volunteers, looking for the places in need of volunteers is necessary. As a member of Tokyo Metropolitan Volunteer Association, we keep close contact with other organizations to encourage more people to participate in volunteer activities.
Japanese Language Classes for Returnees from China
(at Sadowara Center)
These Japanese language classes have been held under the commission of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. After finishing the course, members of the center are trying to help returnees to settle down and make a living properly. At the same time, some programs are planned to help the members understand returnees and difficulties they are facing.
Job Placement Office
Accredited by the Ministry of Labor in 1964, the office has been open at the Tokyo YWCA building to any women including students and graduates of Tokyo YWCA College without charge for consultation and placement. Since 1999, this service has been extended to men as well. Now planning the training course for job consultants is on the way so that we are able meet the increasing needs for placement among older people.
Activities for people with disabilities
(at Itabashi Center、Kokuryo Center, Musashino Center, Tokyo YWCA building, YWCA Fitness WOW)
A day nursery where children with disabilities and those without playing together and after-school activities under the leadership of volunteer leaders are carrying out at the centers. There are some monthly activities for adults in which the members with disabilities are able to participate comfortably.
Reading volunteer service for people with seeing disabilities and the elderly is available at the centers and Tokyo YWCA building, and by request, at homes for the elderly within Tokyo. Special swimming programs for those with disabilities are put into practice at Fitness WOW in the Tokyo YWCA building.
"Tokyo YWCA Kids Garden"
Activities for the elderly
(at YWCA area rooms, Kokuryo Center,Sadowara Center,Tokyo YWCA building)
Centering around the centers, the senior members along with younger generations are quite active in building up a good fellowship so that they are able to support one another physically and spiritually. Contribution to a community cooperating with administration has been positively discussed.
"Senior Dial",the telephone service for the elderly has started in the Tokyo YWCA building in order to listen to their problems or to have a good conversation with them.
"Tokyo YWCA Care-Support" is a agency group aiming to provide assistance and support to a family taking care of its elder member so that he/she is well taken care of at home. This group, started 7 years ago by the graduates of Social Welfare Department of the Tokyo YWCA College, is now located at Sadowara Center building and working hard to expand areas of its service and to improve the quality of services. As an agency designated for Tokyo Metropolitan Care Insurance, home care service business, visiting care service and day care service have been started.
Activities to cope with environmental issues
On Lake Nojiri in Nagano prefecture, the Tokyo YWCA owns a campsite where you can enjoy fresh air and beautiful surroundings which have been cherished for many years. Interesting activities and programs on the subjects such as studies on trees and flowers, how to live together with wild birds and animals, conservation of nature, etc. will be offered all through the year.
